The Gartner Hype Cycle was created by Gartner to explain the adoption and maturity of technologies and applications and how they are relevant for businesses to solve problems and exploit new opportunities.

The new technologies and applications evolve over time through the following 5 stages:

1. Technology Trigger
2. Peak of Inflated Expectations
3. Trough of Disillusionment
4. Slope of Enlightenment
5. Plateau of Productivity

Each year, Gartner places the new and emerging technologies on the cycle.
